BORGES-LOPEZ, Jesús S. et al. AORTIC COARCTATION: AN UNDERDIAGNOSED CAUSE OF SECONDARY ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION. Rev. Mex. med. familiar [online]. 2022, vol.9, n.4, pp.116-121. Epub Jan 30, 2023. ISSN 2696-1296. https://doi.org/10.24875/rmf.22000011.
Aortic coarctation represents 5-8% of all congenital heart diseases and is defined as a narrowing of the aortic lumen at or below the ligamentum arteriosum, classified as preductal or postductal, and there are several theories that try to explain its etiology, which is still unclear. It can be diagnosed from childhood or in adulthood, and every patient before 30 years old, should be suspected of having systemic arterial hypertension, in order to provide timely surgical treatment.
