Abstract

This work proposes an interpretation of the biblical story of the Maccabees, their rebellion, and religious, political, and military resistance against the imperial imposition, through some perspectives collected from Walter Benjamin's writings about youth. Topics like the religious situation before the horizon of the Enlighten Era; the importance that religion has in youth social movements; messianism as it is reinterpreted by the Romantic movement of the Jewish Intellectuals of the so call Mittel Europa as studied by the academic Michael Löwy will be highlighted to, finally, rehearse a reflection on the ideology of military sovereignty in contrast to utopian messianism.
