This article presents reflections obtained from a study of the connections generated in the development of objects of so-called artisanal design. It considers the community context of artisanal work and the creative processes of design, since the concepts and complexities emerge from both fields are essential for understanding the interplay of theories and methods in each one. This paper presents a tool constructed and applied to five cases of linkages between Purépecha artisans in Michoacán and professional designers, some of them graduates of the Universidad Intercultural Indígena de Michoacán. The objective is to explore the strategies and role that the designer plays in this activity, and the resources employed to solve the problems that arise when interpreting the interests and needs of artisanal producers and how they are to be realized or satisfied. We highlight the importance of diagnosis as a primary element of this approach to, and understanding of, this context and in determining requirements and actions that are appropriate for the conditions of the community environment and the field of artisanal production.
