The ornaments worn by Aztec gods were made of several natural elements, although this variety did not restrict the use of the same material to produce very different items. Taking into account the fact that the ornaments of the deities adopted a meaning related to their domains of action, this paper examines the modes they were employed as well as their symbolism. Two specific elements are analyzed: the snowy egret feathers and gold, both of which reveal that polysemy is a central notion to the gods’ ornaments and at least these two principles enable us to distinguish between different symbolisms associated with the same material: either the type of ornament worn can influence its meaning or the meaning is conveyed by the combinations of natural elements -forming an interrelated set of ornaments.
