Adhesive materials are present in many aspects of our daily life. Currently there is a very broad market for these chemicals that includes a wide range of products that differ in their composition and usefulness, the most of them are polymers. The mechanisms through which the phenomenon of adhesion occurs involve tribological, rheological and chemical phenomena. Particularly, chemical bonds exert a preponderant role in the performance of these materials. In this work, we show different examples of polymeric materials employed as adhesives, analyzing how the formation of covalent bonds and establishment of intermolecular forces contribute to the adhesion phenomena. In this work the effect of the primary and secondary chemical bonds in different adhesives is summarized and analyzed in order to explain the mechanism that produces adhesion.
