Resumen

IBARRA GARCIA, María Verónica. Forests tenssions and conflicts in ejido El Rosario, Michoacán, 1938-2010. Invest. Geog [online]. 2011, n.75, pp.75-87. ISSN 2448-7279.

This paper deals with the different uses given to the forest areas of El Rosario ejido (communal land), in the municipality of Ocampo, which is an important part of the Biosphere Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. The forest had been used as raw material (input) for the mining industry during the XIX century but nowadays it has been cut down because the land is needed for agricultural activity, for the urban needs of space, for recreational uses or for the benefit of which illegally cut down the forest (talamontes). All this new controversial uses have fostered social tension because they compete against each other. The aim of this work is to show how society produces a forestry space in a complex and contradictory way, which turns to be, at the same time, a political space of struggle. As a result, the use and potencial of the forest depend on the relations of power.

Palabras llave : Social tension; struggle; political geography; space/social space; monarch butterfly.
