Background: The state of Guerrero is endemic goiter area and thyroid surgery continues to pose a challenge to surgeons due to postoperative complications. There is only one study reported in our state about the results of thyroid surgery so we decided to report the current experience in the management of these patients.

Patients and methods: Retrospective and descriptive study being included patients undergoing thyroid surgery in a period of 3 years (2008-2011). The variables studied were: type of surgery, surgical site, preoperative diagnosis, post surgical morbidity, age and sex. Statistical analysis was by descriptive statistics of each variable, Frequency distribution of measures of central tendency: Fashion, Small, and Medium.

Results: 79 patients, age 20 to 80 years, 75 female patients (95%) male and 4 (5%) were included. The preoperative diagnoses were multinodular goiter 39 cases (49.4%), multinodular colloid goiter in 20 cases (25%), and 4 presumptive cancer (5%); 41 (52%) total thyroidectomy and 38 (48%) were performed hemithyroidectomy. Postoperative Morbidity: 11 patients (13.9%) with transient hypocalcemia resolved during their hospital stay, 3 (3.8%) cases of unilateral laryngeal paralysis. One patient (1.2%) to need reoperation for bleeding. No surgical site infection, injury to adjacent organs or deaths were reported.

Conclusion: Postoperative morbidity in patients undergoing thyroidectomy performed by General Surgeons at our hospital is safe and comparable with literature reports.
