Resumen

MEJIA-RENDON, Gabriel  y  MEJIA-PEREZ, Cynthia Ivonne. Bee honey added to the surgical management of intra-abdominal sepsis. Report of two cases. Cir. gen [online]. 2018, vol.40, n.1, pp.31-37. ISSN 1405-0099.

Among the several uses of bee honey, its antimicrobial activity stands out. There are already special types of honey designed abroad for the treatment of wounds. In recent research, it has been used even in the prevention of intra-abdominal adhesions caused by peritonitis. The surgical treatment of intra-abdominal sepsis (IAS) may include peritoneal lavage and several different strategies according to the severity of the case. We present two patients with very poor prognosis with whom we used honey in an attempt to take advantage of its antimicrobial properties. Both cases had a favorable outcome, and supported what was found in the literature reviewed, previous experiences, and its use for avoiding persistent intra-abdominal sepsis. With this strategy, we hope that bee honey will be useful in preventing abdominal sepsis. Knowing there are limitations in its use, it could be considered as another resource in the treatment or surgical management when necessary.
