Resumen

VIZCARRA-BORDI, Ivonne; LUTZ, Bruno  y  RAMIREZ-HERNANDEZ, Roque. The same hearth: migration and female reproductive work in Mazahua communities. Convergencia [online]. 2013, vol.20, n.61, pp.193-218. ISSN 2448-5799.

In this study we present the results from a research on domestic work and gender relationships in the Mazahua indigenous region of the State of Mexico within the context of national and international migration. In the three villages studied, we found a process of traditionally androcentric re-functionalizing domination: mothers bear the most responsibilities in the absence of their spouses, but not always more autonomy. The migration experience of young women has brought few significant changes when they return to their communities. In sum, the daily activities of both women who migrate and reintegrated as those who stay are far beyond the borders of traditionally defined housework. Many of these activities are considered for social production but as they move into the female domain, they lose their value and are assumed to be new reproductive work.
