The conversion of biomass and its derivatives is an alternative to replace the current fossil fuels. Various types of vegetable oils have been used as model systems for the synthesis of biofuels such as green gasoline and green diesel. This paper reviewed and analyzed the catalytic cracking of canola oil on a mesoporous acid catalyst (H-MCM41) at 400 C and atmospheric pressure. As a result, a modified reaction scheme was proposed, identifying reactions pathways that have not been previously included for the conversion of canola oil in the liquid fractions identified as green gasoline and green diesel. In addition, under the same reaction conditions, the conversion of phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) on H-MCM41 was used as a model system, to evaluate the potential of industrial fermentation wastes in the production of green fuels. The results documented the absolute potential of lecithin for this purpose. This work provides basis for guiding the use of industrial by-products in the production of alternative fuels, and also some guidelines to facilitate the development of kinetic models required to optimize the process conditions and the catalysts suitable for the production of green fuels.
