This paper analyzes the theoretical discussion regarding identity and its pressence on the reflexions relating to problems that cultural diversity implies for our coexistence. It is presented a short review on the use of that concept by some authors from the last two decades. Moreover, based on the perspective of psychoanalytical theory, it stresses the dificulties that implies its use when trying to solve the otherness and diversity problems. Since psychoanalysis concieves identity as an imposture, it is possible to highlight a structure explaining paradoxes emerging from that concept. Not only is this a reason for vindication but also exclusion. The text concludes questioning about the suitability of mantaining the identity concept as a ground for the vindicating social struggles of otherness and diversity.
