BASURTO SALAZAR, Amando. The 2020 General Elections and the Balance Sheet of Democracy in the United States. Norteamérica [online]. 2020, vol.15, n.2, pp.221-231. Epub 25-Oct-2021. ISSN 2448-7228. https://doi.org/10.22201/cisan.24487228e.2020.2.440.
The election of Donald Trump, first as the Republican Party nominee and then as president of the United States, was clear evidence of the predominant ideological and operational crisis of the two main U.S. political parties. What is more, the resulting Trump administration has openly challenged part of the liberal democratic foundations of the U.S. political system. This essay analyzes the different moments of challenges that the Trump election and presidency have represented for the fundamental but delicate balance of power of the U.S. political system and its implications for the 2020 general elections. The author especially emphasizes the sui generis/inverted format of Donald Trump’s populism.
