Resumen

MUNOZ LARROA, Argelia Erandi. The Internationalization of North American Public Streaming Platforms. Norteamérica [online]. 2021, vol.16, n.1, pp.323-350.  Epub 25-Oct-2021. ISSN 2448-7228.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cisan.24487228e.2021.1.472.

This article studies the internationalization of North American public streaming platforms as an opportunity to contribute to worldwide cultural diversity. The geographical expansion of public plat- forms depends on their objectives, operating costs, and the content’s legal conditions. The author identifies five forms of regional platform internationalization: 1) monetization; 2) connections with the diaspora/migrants; 3) international dissemination; 4) involuntary internationalization; and, 5) blockage of content abroad. She found that i) the biggest obstacles to internationalization are the management of rights and distribution and promotional infrastructure costs; ii) prior limitations and language barriers hinder the availability of public streaming platforms among the countries of North America; and, iii) the mode of international dissemination, which deliberately seeks to make one’s own culture known to foreigners, is incipient and not part of state policies.
