LOPEZ SANTIAGO, M.A. et al. Analysis of the Normalized Revealed Comparative Advantage Index for Mezcal, Tequila, and Rum in Mexico. Revista bio ciencias [online]. 2023, vol.10, e1414. Epub 23-Feb-2024. ISSN 2007-3380. https://doi.org/10.15741/revbio.10.e1414.
This study analyzes the dynamics of the pattern of export comparative advantage for a group of three alcoholic beverages - mezcal, tequila, and rum - during the period from 1994 to 2020. A Normalized Revealed Comparative Advantage Index was developed using various databases that publish Mexican global exports of these products. The results showed a strong correlation between the competitiveness of mezcal and tequila, with a value of the comparative advantage index greater than zero. In addition, a long-term upward trend was observed. In contrast, rum showed a negative value (uncompetitive) in the index. It is concluded that the method used allowed a diagnosis of alcoholic beverages according to the consumption trends, thereby identifying the products that have greater relevance in the international market and those that are vulnerable.
