Resumen

ESPINOZA MELENDEZ, Pedro. Antifeminism and catholic feminism in Mexico. The Mexican Catholic Women´s Union and the Acción Femenina magazine, 1933-1958. Rev. interdiscip. estud. género Col. Méx. [online]. 2020, vol.6, e381.  Epub 10-Mar-2020. ISSN 2395-9185.  https://doi.org/10.24201/eg.v6i0.381.

This article aims to analyze some discussions that took place around feminism within the Mexican Catholic Church in the years before the Second Vatican Council, specifically those related to women's suffrage, wage labor and divorce. To do this the magazine Acción Femenina, founded in 1933 as the official communication body of the Mexican Catholic Women's Union (UFCM), one of the female branches of the Mexican Catholic Action (ACM) was used. The hypothesis is that there was a tension with regard to gender discourses, since in their publications anti-feminist positions coexisted with feminist claims. This lead us to complexify the history of Catholic feminism in Mexico, which could have its origins in the before the Second Vatican Council.

Palabras llave : Catholic Church; Mexican Catholic Action; feminism; antifeminism.
