This article analyzes Federico de Onís’s interpretation of the relations between Spanish and Latin American cultures, from the time of his arrival in the United States in 1916 through to the publication of España en América in 1955. In presenting his ideas, specific attention will be paid to the rigor, sometimes close to intransigence, with which he claimed the existence of a cultural unity that he considered a mark of identity common to all Spanish-speaking peoples, a feature capable of persisting beyond any possible historical contingency or geographical limitation.
