Introduction
Mexico is experiencing a phenomenon of abandonment of breastfeeding. Numerous factors associated with not starting or abandoning it before six months have been described.
Objective
To determine the factors associated with abandoning of exclusive breastfeeding in the first level.
Method
Analytical, observational, prospective and cross seccional. In lactating women, with a universe of 202, an expected proportion of 0.50 an a confidence level of 95% = 132. A survey developed by Kahn Liz was applied. χ2 and OR were used as a measure of association. A p-value ≤ 0.05 was used as statistically significant.
Results
One hundred thirty-two cases were evaluated. Factors related to abandoning of breastfeeding: lesion in the mammary gland, support networks, type of breastfeeding, and various factors (p < 0.05); factors associated with abandonment: stress OR 2.98, support networks OR 3.13.
Conclusions
Exclusive breastfeeding is carried out in only 62.2% of cases, and the main factors associated with abandonment are stress, absence of support networks.
