Resumen
LOPEZ MENDEZ, Laura Angélica. The influence of smart design in the legislation of the synthetic biology in Mexico. Rev. filos. Univ. Iberoam. [online]. 2023, vol.55, n.155, pp.52-70. Epub 17-Mayo-2024. ISSN 2954-4602. https://doi.org/10.48102/rdf.v55i155.182.
Synthetic biology is responsible for modifying and redesigning complex biological organisms for beneficial purposes towards humans, and there is a popular moral objection to its practice: the creation of living beings is God’s business, and not humanity’s. Said popular objection influences the process of legislating this technique to some degree, which implies that the issue is not being addressed from a secular bioethical perspective, and therefore, does not guarantee the prevalence of public interest and the improvement of the regulatory framework of synthetic biology. The central hypothesis of this article is that the Intelligent Design affects the way in which synthetic biology is conceived and, therefore, its legislation.
