Resumen

WISNIAK, Jaime. Conservation of Energy: Readings on the Origins of the First Law of Thermodynamics. Part I. Educ. quím [online]. 2008, vol.19, n.2, pp.159-171. ISSN 0187-893X.

The concepts of matter, motion, and energy have occupied the minds of philosophers and scientists since ancient times. Although there were many who believed that mass and energy are conserved, it took many years until the first law of thermodynamics acquired its present form. The law of conservation of energy is one of the fundamental principles of the physical world as we understand it today. By negating the possibility of perpetual motion it puts a ceiling to the utilization of energy and to the thermodynamic efficiency of processes.

Palabras llave : Energy; thermodynamics; conservation of energy; perpetuum mobile; first law; Bernouilli; Descartes; Carnot; Spinoza; Leibniz.
