The present work shows a didactic proposal designed to introduce the concept of chemical reaction to high school students.

The driving axis of the proposal is the chemical reaction as a process in which substances are obtained from others. The proposal consists of four didactic activities: three experimental activities and one reading. In the first three, it takes advantage of the fact that each substance has a different set of properties (the very thing of each substance) to recognize that a reaction has occurred. In the first, substances of different color are formed; in the second, a substance with tear-producing properties is produced; and, in the third, substances with odor are obtained. In the fourth activity, the obtaining of energy from a chemical process is highlighted.
