TARDIF, Eric. Minerals that Stir up Controversy: The Beginning of the Struggle for What’s Left?. Anu. Mex. Der. Inter [online]. 2014, vol.14, pp.765-800. ISSN 1870-4654.
It is common knowledge that industrial production is dependent upon a steady access to natural resources, whose prices are generally determined by the market. The last decades have witnessed a shift in this scheme, caused by the growing scarcity of resources, the increase in world population, and the technological breakthroughs that require minerals whose commercialization sometimes ends up financing armed conflicts in some parts of the world; in other cases, resource rich countries decide to exercise a monopoly on them, thus violating the rules of world trade. The international community has tried to face these challenges, with mitigated success.
