The increase in the number of people who fulfill the desire of having children with the support of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) is a fact and has been object of uncountable researches around the world. In Brazil, this reality is set by the absence of a specific regulation. However, in its turn, the Federal Medicine Council (CFM) provides ethical guidelines (resolutions) that have been regularly modified since 1992, the year of its first resolution. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that the process of amending such guidelines over time is related to the expansion of access to ART in Brazil. These technologies enabled in recent years the increase of single people, especially women, to accomplish the desire to have children on an independent manner. In light of the social role of any technology, it is discussed how the expansion of access to ART shapes and is shaped by the tendencies of contemporary societies such as the enhancement of female autonomy (empowerment) and individualism.
