LLAVEN-MACIAS, Viridiana. Mammals a riparian forest in Grijalva river the middle basin, Chiapas, Mexico. Acta Zool. Mex [online]. 2013, vol.29, n.2, pp.287-303. ISSN 2448-8445.
The objective of this work is to present a list of mammal species of a riparian forest in the Grijalva river the middle basin Chiapas, Mexico, with information on conservation status, endemism, abundance, richness and diversity. There were four field visits for each sampling site (five sites), from April to December 2009. The records of the species were obtained from capturing mammals with Sherman traps, Havahart traps, and mist nets. In addition, day and night trails were conducted on permanent transects 700 meters long and 10 meters wide. Species accumulation curves were constructed based on the model of Clench and Chao1. The values of abundance, richness and diversity (temporal and spatial) were statistically analyzed with analysis of variance on ranks Kruskal-Wallis (K-W). Were obtained 755 records of mammals, corresponding to five orders, 11 families, 22 genera and 31 species of mammals. Species richness ranged from 15 (Rancho Don Pablo) to 20 (Tres Picos). The diversity (H') ranged from 2.468 (Rancho Don Eraclio) to 1.938 (El Morro). No significant differences were observed between the values of abundance, richness and diversity among sampling sites nor sampling months (K-W; p > 0.05). Mammal species recorded in this study were not listed in NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 and CITES (2012); those found in IUCN (2012) were of least concern (LC). In Mexico, little is known about the mammals associated with riparian forests; hence, this study is one of the first of its kind that will contribute to management planning, conservation and/or mitigation of these ecosystems. Based on this study, we propose a halt in obtaining wood in this area and the implementation of vegetative strips in order to conserve riparian forests and hence mammals.
