In recent years, the notion of whether the Olmec served as the catalyst for cultural development in distant sites on the Gulf Coast during the Early Preclassic (1500-850 BC) period has been questioned. Given their widespread distribution in different regions, objects that seemingly reflect the "Olmec style" involve ceramic vases decorated with cosmological symbols. This work formally analyzes a series of these motifs, providing iconographic analogies to help decipher their meaning and offer evidence for examining the origin of this symbolic code.
