This current article focuses on the role played by the coat of arms of Mexico City as a second body of the city and its council between 1523 and 1629. After dealing with the circumstances related to the concession of the coat of arms to Mexico in 1523 and its sense, the article discusses the different uses and contexts in which it is used by the city council. The study shows how the heraldry was a powerful form of representation in which the municipal authority not only projects its own conception of Mexico as a city of conquest and conquerors, but endows itself with a mystical and transcendental body projecting an everlasting reality upon the city.
