This article examines the poetry of the Mexican writer Laura Méndez de Cuenca (1853-1928) with the purpose of delimiting her poetics, an exercise which has not been undertaken in her critical reception. It proposes an analysis that takes into account the original publications of her poetry in the periodical press of her time, comparing them with the modern editions in order to evaluate her reception and revise the rhetorical elements that configure what I call her poetics. It is important to note that these pages are the first attempt to grasp the literary style, main contribution and innovations to canonical poetry of one of the most important poets of her time.
