Resumen

VARELA-VARELA, Abril. Trash in its place The problem with waste collection in the condominium space. Alteridades [online]. 2023, vol.33, n.66, pp.61-72.  Epub 01-Dic-2023. ISSN 2448-850X.  https://doi.org/10.24275/hibc3764.

This article explores the influence of condominium spaces on practices and representations related to waste management. An ethnographic study was conducted within a condominium, gathering information through participant observation and semi-structured interviews with key actors. It was found that the desired behavior of waste separation is conditioned by underlying tensions within condominium life, as the socio-spatial order of the condominium tend to prioritize a principle of “convenience” in waste collection practices. This research contributes to exploring the condominiums’ capacity to assume the burdens of waste management that the local government of Mexico City has transferred to them. It is concluded that waste collection is treated as a common-good subject to social rules of coexistence that give meaning to community life within the condominium space, rather than being solely an individual action.

Palabras llave : urban waste; condominium; social norms; recycling.
