DIAZ-ROSALES, Juan de Dios; MORALES-POLANCO, Sergio; DERAS-RAMOS, Dante  y  YANEZ-MUNOZ, Goretti. Type I and II sphincter of Oddi disfunction: case-control study. Cir. gen [online]. 2023, vol.45, n.1, pp.14-20.  Epub 30-Sep-2023. ISSN 1405-0099.  https://doi.org/10.35366/110698.

Introduction:

the sphincter of Oddi is a valve complex that regulates bile flow and pancreatic secretion. The sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOP) is divided into stenosis (SOP type I) or dyskinesia (SOP type II). The objective of this study is to describe the scenario of this pathology, make a comparison with cases of choledocholithiasis and demonstrate whether there are differences or similarities.

Material and methods:

a case-control study was made where patients sent to gastrointestinal endoscopy with a diagnosis of benign obstruction of the bile duct were analyzed during the period between January 2019 to December 2021.

Results:

within the characteristics of the patients with DEO and proven choledocholithiasis, there was no statistically significant difference. Neither could statistically revealing differences be verified in cannulation strategies, nor in post-ERCP pancreatitis.

Conclusions:

both type I and type II OED should be considered as the same entity, being treated with the same therapy (ERCP with sphincterotomy). Choledocholithiasis and OED behave as similar pathological spectra, since the clinical characteristics involved do not show relevant statistical differences.

Palabras llave : choledocholithiasis; sphincter of Oddi dysfunction; dyskinesia; stenosis.
