PFANNENSTEIN, Bernd; MARTINEZ JARAMILLO, Jonatán Obed; ANACLETO HERRERA, Edgar Eduardo y SEVILLA VILLALOBOS, Salvador. Urban planning and the influence of gated communities: The Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, México. Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.59, pp.1087-1117. Due to deficient urban planning, the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area has gone through a series of processes that finally resulted in a transformation where the phenomenon of gated urbanizations is of significant relevance. In particular, the conditions that the real estate sector found in this city allowed it to position itself as a main protagonist in the production of gated residential areas with restricted access. In the year 2016, the metropolis reached the total amount of 2973 gated communities. This phenomenon and its evolution require a discussion about how to rededicate public and urban spaces for collective use.
