PENAGOS, Lina. Competitive Authoritarianism: Experiences from the Colombian-Venezuelan Border. CONfines relacion. internaci. ciencia política [online]. 2021, vol.17, n.32, pp.79-92. Epub 29-Ene-2024. ISSN 1870-3569. https://doi.org/10.46530/cf.vi32/cnfns.n32.p79-92.
The article offers an approximate application of competitive authoritarianism in the border region between Colombia and Venezuela from academic review studies and field observations made since 2015. Driven by an economic dynamic, competitive authoritarianism constitutes nowadays a category of analysis that combines: the coexistence of democratic institutions with the influence of illegal economies; the multiplication of actors in competition for the legitimacy of their authority; the flourishing of gray zones and the evolutions of our democracies. These phenomena stress the weaknesses of the state institutions and therefore, a significant challenge for liberal democracies in times of globalization, technological revolution, and new institutional paths post-COVID-19.
