GUILLEN VILLAFUERTE, José Javier. The Smallpox Epidemic of 1794-1795 in Chiapas and Guatemala. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2022, vol.17, e-556. Epub 27-Ene-2022. ISSN 1870-4115. https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2021.v16.556.
During the smallpox epidemic of 1794-1795, the authorities of the Kingdom of Guatemala launched a health campaign that consisted, on the one hand, of regional and local adaptations of the provisions issued by the Spanish Crown since the 1780s with the aim of to eradicate this evil and, on the other hand, in original initiatives undertaken by Guatemalan officials and doctors. It is of interest here to determine the measures that were adopted to attend to the affected population and the participation of the subdelegates, mayors, magistrates and parish priests in the application of the campaign, and finally, the scope that these actions had on the Chiapas city government and the western Guatemala.
