Resumen

VILLAGOMEZ VALDES, Gina  y  SANCHEZ GONZALEZ, María Consuelo. Mayan Women: Aging, Poverty and Vulnerability. Península [online]. 2014, vol.9, n.2, pp.75-97. ISSN 1870-5766.

This study analyzes the vulnerability of the elderly women in Mexico and, particularly, in two Mayan communities in Campeche, and Yucatán; as well as the strategies of the women and their families to tackle poverty in a context of social inequality, exclusion and discrimination. Some demographic aspects of the female population and the types of support or transfers received from the state, community and family have been identified. It also points out the resources that they continue providing to the family group. With these data it is noted that especially the female age is in a situation of vulnerability that needs to be attended with precision and that, at the same time and contrary to what you might think, older women are not passive subjects or a burden, but continue to provide various resources to the family.

Palabras llave : gender; elders; poverty; vulnerability; transfers.
