SANCHEZ ASPEYTIA, David et al. Genetic effects and heterosis in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) in field and greenhouse for yield and quality. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2010, vol.1, n.4, pp.455-467. ISSN 2007-0934.

Tomato cultivation (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) ranks second place of importance in Mexico, for its big production of 2.22 million tons that reached in year 2007, with an average yield of 35.54 t ha-1. For northeast region of Mexico this crop represents an agricultural alternative under protected agriculture conditions due to little water availability and to extreme temperatures that rise up to 48 ºC in summer. Knowledge of general and specific combinatory ability of genetic materials is essential to achieve diverse objectives in a such program of improvement as: develop hybrid and varieties, increase genetic variability and avoid genetic erosion. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate genetic effects of four parents and six possible direct breeds, evaluated in field and greenhouse with variables yield and quality analysis. In combined analysis of variance there were highly significant differences (p≤ 0.01) between environments for fruit average weight and yield as well as significant differences (p≤ 0.05) for days to first harvest, where environmental conditions of each place were different for genotypes in general, including parents and hybrids, fruit average weight and yield, indicating that genotypes behaved different and that hybrids differed in their behavior due to genetic diversity of parents.
