TAMARIZ ESTRADA, Cristina. The Guerrero neighborhood, 1942-1979: processes of attachment and permanence through Simmel’s perspective of social qualities of space. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2019, n.17, pp.27-58. ISSN 2007-4964.
The article presents the first results of a larger research project entitled “Vivir en la Guerrero: Cartographies of Memory”, currently being carried out in the field of urban sociology based on documentary and oral sources. The study is designed to explore, through the narratives of subjects, the various factors that impact, the configuration of the social space in a popular neighborhood of Mexico City and their influence on the sense of belonging that residents express. Based on Simmel’s theoretical proposals, the social qualities of space are articulated as categories of analysis for the 1942-1979 period. By applying Simmel’s four dimensions -fixation, proximity/distance, social limit and exclusivity- it becomes possible to understand the configuration of the processes of attachment and mobilization in this neighborhood as forms of resistance to the modernizing urban project of the mid-20th century.
