The Materials Research Institute of the UNAM aims to make scientific and technological research on structure, properties, processing and performance of materials. Nanotechnology seeks to benefit from the properties that occur when at least one of the dimensions of the material is less than 100 nm, or when during the process for obtaining the elementary units are controlled at the molecular or atomic scale, forming particles with smaller than 10 nm. The IIM’s researchers work on different topics related to nanoscience and nanotechnology: nanocomposites, nanoporous materials, modeling and simulation, nanostructured materials, carbon-based nanostructures, and molecular materials. The study and impact of nanotechnology applications are varied, ranging from the development of medical, transport of drugs, antibacterial coatings implants, to industrial applications in manufacturing and development of catalysts, fuel cells, capture of polluting gases, gas sensors, optical devices, solar cells, improving polymers, etc. Derived from these studies, the IIM has a variety of partnerships with educational institutions, research centers, public bodies and private, national and international. Likewise, innovation of his research has been reflected in the filing and obtaining patents, as well as the development of projects with great impact on society. These achievements are the result of high quality and expertise of its researchers and technicians, as well as the infrastructure available at the Institute.
