Resumen

VILLEGAS MARTINEZ, Víctor Saúl. The Performativity in Enrique Serna’s story “Amor propio”. Connotas. Rev. crit. teór. lit. [online]. 2020, n.21, pp.33-57.  Epub 15-Feb-2021. ISSN 2448-6019.  https://doi.org/10.36798/critlit.vi21.347.

This article studies the representation of identities in Enrique Serna’s story “Amor propio” which is included in the volume Amores de segunda mano (1991). From the analysis of the identities of the two characters in this story, based on the theoretical framework proposed by queer studies, it is shown that this text points out how subjects are subjected to a gender device that determines their existence; consequently, the concept of performativity, which alludes to the cultural construction that underpins the determination of the roles of the subjects, makes sense when the story calls into question fixed identities and criticizes the naturalization of gender. Therefore, “Amor propio” exhibits how the individual is constructed from conventional identities and becomes the subject of the symbolic and physical framework of the device of sexuality, thus tacitly alluding to gender relations and constructions.
