This article analyzes the role of cruelty and monstrosity in José Revueltas’s El apando as an emancipatory expression that resists not only the prison, but also the discursive order. Against the dominant criticism that subscribes to a dialectical dimension of his work, we propose a reading that indicates the expression of the whirlwind of reality. Through various authors we point out that these dimensions represent a more radical rebellious movement than the one pointed out by most critics who are based on the “dying side”.
