VARGAS MALDONADO, Mauricio. The counter-fait divers of José Revueltas: testimony of social denunciation. Connotas. Rev. crit. teór. lit. [online]. 2022, n.25, pp.204-231. Epub 02-Jun-2023. ISSN 2448-6019. https://doi.org/10.36798/critlit.v0i25.435.
This work seeks to demonstrate how the nota roja news1 written by José Revueltas for the newspaper El Popular, during the forties of the 20th century, could be an example of what in Discipline and Punish, Michel Foucault called a counter-fait diver: a note that uses the criminal events published in the yellow press to show the whole series of social inequalities that underlie these journalistic publications. Although the counter-fait divers assimilates the discursive, narrative, and rhetorical features of the nota roja, it uses them with the intention of generating a semantic twist that reveals the inequalities that underlies its story. This article intend to analyze the note “Awful Drama of Misery”, published in the crime section of El Popular, on October 4, 1942. To do this, a model structure of the nota roja (Barthes, Lara Klahr, Arriaga) is configured, substantive narrative and rhetorical features are identified, and then it is observed how these elements -specifically in the case of “Awful Drama of Misery- are articulated according to the forms and discursive conventions of its time, to turn the nota roja into a testimony of social denunciation.
