CEBALLOS MINA, Owen Eli. Credit services to finance the consumption of Mexican households 2020. Anál. econ. [online]. 2022, vol.37, n.94, pp.43-62. Epub 08-Abr-2022. ISSN 2448-6655. https://doi.org/10.24275/uam/azc/dcsh/ae/2022v37n94/ceballos.
Financial development claims that credit services represent an opportunity to improve the welfare of the poor. We analyze the effects of credit access on household consumption structure using data from the income and expenditure survey ENIGH-2020. We estimate five expenditure items models by instrumental variables of credit cards and bank loans to explain consumption. The effects are validated using Propensity Score Matching models. Results show that there are differentiated effects of the two sources of credit on the structure of consumption. Credit cards drive the increase on aggregate consumption through spending on health, durable goods, and other non-durable goods. Loans used by households with a lower socioeconomic level have few positive effects on expenditure items. Credit services smooth consumption, but do not contribute to the reduction of gaps in Mexico.
