Quality in higher education institutions is an issue that has gained strength since the 80s of the last century. The objective is to build and validate a useful model for improving the quality of Higher Education Institutions. The method of Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS), is applied to a sample of 258 new students of the Technological Institute of Hermosillo. Findings, it is established that the variables: family or friendship environment; location; costs; infrastructure; and academic prestige, significantly influence career choice. Relevance, Provide a tool to increase their demand for income and reduce the dropout rate. Originality, constructing a model by considering all the extrinsic factors that influence the career choice variable. Limitation, the analysis of the relationship between the variables choice and dropout, requires the graduation of this generation of students surveyed.
