The truncation of common and proper names in Madrid has been seen as a restrictive phenomenon. It has been considered that in this city the hypocoristics are only formed from the first two syllables of the base name. However, in my work I have found that, despite being a current trend, it is not the only way to create shortenings in Madrid. By means of the Theory of Optimality, I would like to show what are the restrictions that operate in Spanish in Madrid to truncate names. In addition, I propose some other restrictions in the diversity of mechanisms used in the creation of shortenings in Spanish in that city.
