Introduction:

the aim of this study was to analyze the prognosis related to complications in the post-surgical period of patients with complicated appendicitis.

Material and methods:

retrospective study over a period of three years. Pediatric patients with complicated appendicitis, who underwent appendectomy by open technique or by laparoscopy, were included.

Results:

109 patients were studied, aged from three to 16 years; there was a higher proportion of male patients (65.1%). Twenty-three (21.1%) post-surgical complications were identified; 10 corresponded to infection in the surgical site, six to intra-abdominal abscess, five to paralytic ileus, and two patients with perforation.

Conclusions:

in pediatric patients with complicated appendicitis, the incidence of postoperative complications is about 20%; surgical site infection is the most common complication.
