The Rarámuris, who inhabit the Tarahumara range in the north of Mexico, have in the diversity of their dances one of their main sources of expression. The matachín dance, which has a colonial origin that extends all over Mexico, has had among the Rarámuris a peculiar evolution that is not only a source of identity but is also used to express their cultural plurality. Based on data obtained mainly during eleven months of field work, the author tries to respond to several questions such as: How are the different matachín dances distributed in the Rarámuri territory? What are the main characteristics that distinguish the High and Low Tarahumara regions? What is the role played by a tradition reinvented as a vehicle for the expression of cultural plurality?
