This paper presents the results of a study devoted to evaluate, using nonlinear analyses, two different code designs for 15-story, reinforced concrete (RC) special moment-resisting framed (SMRF) buildings: a) one done with the traditional design method that dates back from the 80s and, b) the new procedure outlined in Appendix A of NTCS-2004. Buildings were designed for seismic zone IIIb of NTCS-2004 for a response modification factor Q=4. From the results obtained in this study, it is possible to conclude that the procedure outlined in Appendix A of NTCS-2004 lead one to arrive to less conservative designs for RC-SMRF buildings under study than those obtained with the traditional design method that dates from the late 80s.
