Resumen

CARRENO-COLLATUPA, Raúl. Masons' Marks in the Matriz Church of Moquegua, Peru. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2021, vol.43, n.118, pp.155-181.  Epub 03-Nov-2021. ISSN 0185-1276.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iie.18703062e.2021.118.2744.

The "signing" of blocks of stone with identifying marks was a longstanding and very common practice, particularly in medieval Europe, whence it was transplanted to the Americas. The surviving wall of Moquegua's oldest church (the Matriz church)-many times destroyed by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions until its total abandonment in 1868-contains the largest known concentration of stonemason's marks in Peru. We have recognized 107 types of alphabetic, geometric and figurative signs, probably engraved between 1784 and 1792. Those marks are characterized by their large size and the coarseness of their stroke. There are at least two types of singular figurative engravings that may not correspond to lapidary marks, but could be considered as lithogravures. The article also contains an overview of the origin and the precursory studies of stonemason's marks.

Palabras llave : Masons' marks; sponsors' marks; Moquegua; glyptography; lithogravures; Matriz church; stonecutters.
