SERNA MORENO, Jesús. Las supervivencias lingüísticas de origen taíno en el oriente cubano. Cuicuilco [online]. 2009, vol.16, n.46, pp.118-133. ISSN 0185-1659.
This work is part of a larger investigation of indigenous ethno-cultural survivals in Oriental Cuba. This research has been carried out by consulting various archival and bibliographical sources, in addition to fieldwork. The theoretical-methodological approach is based on the proposal of the Brazilian anthropologist Darcy Ribeiro, who, in the typology of the peoples of America, considers the population of the Antilles as New Peoples. There is an enormous quantity of terms of origin aruaco still alive in the speech of the Cuban people. We present the most important terms systematically, by means of a table, divided in elements of material and spiritual culture of the population of this region of Cuba, which give cohesion and meaning to cubanity understood as: the Cuban character, idiosyncrasy, and condition. The Cuban people is rooted en its Creole past, a product of a mixture principally between the Spanish and the Afro, with a fundamental indigenous basis, and in the actual cubanity which is the product of this historical process of integration and synthetization of all the ethno-cultural elements which constitute it as the ethno-cultural identity of the Cuban people.
