Resumen

CARBAJAL LOPEZ, David. Usurae in calamo Agustín Rivera Between Books and Newspapers, 1870-1910. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2022, n.63, pp.91-115.  Epub 24-Mar-2023. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2022.63.77695.

Priest Agustín Rivera’s efforts to live by his pen from 1869 onwards allow us to delve deeper into the workings of the Porfiriato’s cultural field. Priest Rivera made his books known through the press, sending them dedicated to the editors of both liberal and protestant newspapers. The clearest sign of this collaboration were the advertisements of his books and the publication of excerpts and even full texts, always selectively, according to the interests of the journalists. In this way, they contributed to the sale of Priest Rivera’s books and to reinforcing his prestige as a liberal.

Palabras llave : press; liberalism; secularization; public opinion; clergy.
