This article analyzes the cinematographic exhibition in the city of Oaxaca from its origins to the beginning of the 1960s, with emphasis on the double character of movie theaters as spaces for socialization and staging of differences and agreements between social sectors in a time of transformations derived from the modernizing policies underway in that period. The subject is approached from the perspective of media studies that propose that cinematographic audiences establish different consumer pacts around film exhibitions and interpret in different ways the cultural products offered on the screens. In the specific case of Oaxaca city, it is proposed, based on an extensive newspaper review, that such pacts also implied the deployment, from the elites, of strategies to regulate and protect the reception of symbolic production by the popular public. Overall, this work takes part in the discussion about the ways the massive public spectacles, such as the cinema, contributed to the expression of differences, agreements and disputes between heterogeneous social groups, with diverse social and political interests, and with contrasting ways of adapting to the impositions of modern urban life in cities within Mexico.
