The different transformations of society have had important sequels for the educational systems; the modern globalized world implies a series of challenges that those educational systems have to face up to. One of them, which is analysed in this article, has to do with competence and, particularly, with its consequences on higher education as a result of the funding policies and the role that has been assigned to evaluation in order to induce a modernization process of the system based on criteria such as with rationality, efficiency and quality.
