In this article the author analyzes the achievements and limitations shown by the comparison of results of the Nacional Tests implemented by the Nacional Institute for Educational Assessment in June of 2003 and 2004 in order to have a grip on the reading and mathematics abilities of pupils who attend the sixth grade of basic education and the third grade of secondary education. The results of the tests are compared and analyzed by stratum, educational modalities and federal entity. The data show, with a relative stability, that the private institutions get the best score, whereas the indigenous schools and the distance secondary institutions obtain the lowest marks. However, when the point of comparison takes into account the federal entity in a diachronic perspective, the results are less stable, which leads the conclusion that it is not possible to know the actual progress experienced by the country along the years because of the significant differences in the instruments that have been used.
